Get yourself a VOKI

This is a fun tool that you can use with your students to promote writing and reading skills. For instance you can give your students an exercise like 1. write a short introduction of yourself 2. imagine you are a character in book, movie, etc 3. create a poem on a particular topic/theme.

Log on to the Voki website www.voki.com/ and have students customize their free Voki--there are many options for students to chose from. Once they are finished they can type in the text or if you pay a fee you can use a microphone and include the actual voice of your students.

On the voki website they have ideas for using voki in the classroom check it out. You can CLICK on my Voki for an example of how it works--the eyes move in the direction of the mouse cursor--way cool!

  1. I like the "look" of your blog immensely, Stacy.

I clicked on the website that you posted and I found the information on the use of the Voki in the classroom was really "cool" as you said.

I think the added feature of the microphone that uses the actual voice of students in the classroom would be particularly motivating to students. Of course the added cost is something to consider but I think if bought for use in schools, it will be worthwhile. This would increase confidence and build the self esteem of students.

Thanks for the added information, Stacy

  2. hi renuka thank you for visiting my blog and thanks for the compliments. I really like voki as a literacy tool as it can be used to give purpose to students'work.

They can collaborate and share their vokis on blogs, wikis and facebook all the while building their reading and writing skills in a fun way.

Our students are reading and writing in a digital environment so we need to expose to the many digital tools that they can use to bring texture and layers their expression

  3. Wow!I had never heard of the VOKI before and I was pleasantly surprised. I always take my own amusement into consideration, when I am exposed to new learning materials such as these. I could only imagine how amused my students
    would be.

In doing more and more research on the benefits of technology in the classroom, there is really no reason why our students' literacy levels can't be boosted. Furthermore, students might not even be aware of the fact that they are learning because they might be enjoying the process so much.

As educators of the 21st century we should ensure that our labs and classrooms be outfitted with such technology to assist our students in their academic pursuits.

Thank you for bringing the voki to my attention Stacy.

  4. I love voki
as you say there is the fun factor which will ensure high engagement for our students while they are learning. The benefit of web technologies is that if used well they can harness our students out of school interests and activities with that of the in school learning.

We just need to think out of the box and experiment with how to make learning more relevant to the 21st century and to our students' realities. Thanks for your comments NJRSpecialist
